Curiosity

Children are born into the world curious, their brains seeking meaning for experiences they encounter. Children need opportunities to act upon this curiosity through open-ended activities that allow them to explore, ask questions, experiment and play. Educated by Nature programs occur in natural spaces that inspire and engage curious minds – following a stream, building a hut, making a stick boat float, digging and building.

“Children continuously strive to answer the question, ‘what would happen if…?’ They cannot answer this question unless they try different approaches, demonstrate persistence, fail and try again. It is only through experience that children build and develop skills that enable them to become both competent and confident. This means that they must be able to act upon the world and then reflect on the impact of their actions. In addition, they must then have the opportunities to take those reflections and apply them to future experiences.” Wendy Banning & Ginny Sullivan (2011)
